WHIRLPOOL JET BOAT TOURS: REVIEW, TIPS & EXPERIENCE GUIDE

Posted on September 7th, 2026. Niagara Falls, Canada

In all the years I’ve spent guiding Niagara Falls tours, and learning all I can about the history of Niagara Falls, I’ve yet to come across an experience quite like the one you get with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, and I’d like to share that with you now.

Have you been considering booking a Jet Boat tour but unsure if it’s right for you? We hope this review and experience guide gives you the information needed to decide.

Note: this is the Whirlpool Jet Boat tours, which is very different than the Niagara City Cruises boat cruise experience.

HOW TO GET TO THE WHIRLPOOL JET BOATS

The Canadian location of the Whirlpool Jet Boats is 55 River Frontage Road in historic Queenston Ontario, roughly 14 kms down river from Niagara Falls.

The best ways to get there are:

  1. Driving by car to enjoy their free parking in one of their convenient 60+ parking spaces.
  2. Using the WEGO transit system to get to the Floral Clock and taking advantage of their complimentary rapid transit shuttle that brings you to and from the Whirlpool Jet Boat location with plenty of time before your scheduled jet boat time.
  3. They also accommodate large buses and shuttles, often hosting large groups of up to 150 guests at a time (e.g. camps, schools, international tour
  4. groups, corporate retreats, etc.) and offer free parking for buses and shuttles as well.

Note: There is also a second location on the American side of the border; 115 S. Water Street, Lewiston, NY 14092

BEFORE THE WHIRLPOOL JET BOAT EXPERIENCE

To help make sure your experience goes as smoothly as possible, here are some things you should know:

Complete the mandatory waiver online before arriving. After booking, your confirmation email will provide a link and reminder to do this. It’s quick and easy.

Make sure to arrive early. They ask all customers to arrive 45 minutes before their scheduled tour time to make sure people have time to check in and attend the mandatory safety orientation before the experience begins.

We strongly agree with this. In fact we arrived around 60 minutes early and got to enjoy some time watching the boats load and leave the docks.

Come dressed in what you plan to wear on the boat (if you can). If that’s not possible, they offer complimentary change rooms and lockers you can use.

TIP: Do not wear flip flops. Any footwear you’re ok with getting wet that has a strap on the back heel is good. During our ride at least one person lost a flip flop when the water washed it off their foot. Wearing crocs? Make sure they’re in “sport mode”.

Accept the complimentary poncho (if you’re someone who gets cold easily). It will not keep you dry (they’re not designed for that on this attraction) but they will keep you a little warmer. Even on a hot day like the one we enjoyed for our experience (over 30 degrees) the winds can make you feel cold when you’re wet.

OUR WHIRLPOOL JET BOAT EXPERIENCE

In short; the experience was both longer (around 40 minutes) and better than my high expectations were primed for.

Even an 8 year old with us (who was a bit hesitant / fearful before hand) couldn’t stop smiling during it and mentioned how great it was several times in the days following.

A few notable sights we got to see while onboard:

  • Brock Monument
  • Queenston / Lewiston Bridge
  • Sir Adam Beck Power Station (Canadian Side)
  • Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant (American side)
  • Around 12,000 years of exposed rock cliffs that Niagara Falls carved its way through
  • Class 5 rapids (that you go through several times: a highlight of the tour)
  • Class 6 rapids (seen but not experienced as that would be highly illegal and dangerous)
  • Whirlpool (of course)

Our guide Mikayla was fun and knowledgeable while making sure everyone was kept safe.

My personal favorite moment of the experience was when the boat idled in the whirlpool with a view up river towards one of the very few class 6 rapids that exist in the world.

Because I was lucky enough to be sat on the outside of the port (left) side of the boat, there was nothing obstructing my view so it felt like it was just me and the water. In that moment I began to better understand the impression some famous first time visitors had of Niagara Falls in the 1800s:

“How near to my creator I was standing.” - Charles Dickens.

“Could not behold without a shudder.” - Father Louis Hennepin

“Seized, at once, all power of speech away, and filled our souls with terror.” - Alexander Wilson, Niagara: A History of The Falls.

What’s interesting to consider during the experience is that even though the tour does not make it up river far enough to see the Falls themselves, all the water roaring past us came from there.

I found myself thinking of the water molecules that had plunged more than 180 feet over the falls, surrendered to the fury of the Class 6 rapids, been swept into the embrace of the whirlpool, and then hurled once more through the churning Class 5 waters before, at last, coming to rest upon our joyful faces as Captain Charlie sent us into its mighty waves.

My rating of the experience? Easily 5/5. Highly recommended.

AFTER THE WHIRLPOOL JET BOAT EXPERIENCE

Once you’ve handed back your life jacket and dried off (which doesn’t take long, we were mostly dry by the time we arrived back at the dock), you can check out their little gift shop or refuel with a snack.

TIP: We made an afternoon of it by stopping off at the nearby Queenston Heights Park following our tour for a picnic, a closer look at the impressive Brock Monument and an exploration of the Nations Memorial.

SHOULD YOU PURCHASE THE MEDIA PACKAGE?

The answer depends on your situation.

For us it was an easy yes, especially with the pre-purchase price being $10 less, since we knew it came with videos and pictures which we wanted to have as keepsakes.

For others, especially those who may have already purchased keep sake photos from other attractions during your visit, the answer may be different.

The story that began thanks to the Boy Scouts of America, (https://www.scouting.org) a canoe trip in 1971, and a test run up the rapids in 1991 now continues with you and your next Whirlpool Jet Boat Experience.
